Celestial is an original pattern designed with a clean, modern aesthetic in mind. I wanted to work with solids, and to limit the color palette (I used Kona Cotton solids in complementary hues). This minimalist technique puts the heavy lifting on the fundamental design principle of line, making the strong geometric pattern the primary focus. I chose straight-line machine quilting in keeping with the minimalist vibe, and for added dimension, included several lines of oversized hand quilting using pearl cotton thread. I found an ideal fabric for the back, a Denyse Schmidt design called Hadley (it is such a great fit for the color and style of the quilt top that it almost looks like I chose the back fabric first). Celestial was juried into QuiltCon, a distinct honor to be displayed among such amazing modern quilts.
